Libyan rebel oil production down for 4 more weeks

BENGHAZI, Libya (AP) -- Libyan rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafi won't be able to produce more crude oil for at least another four weeks and are taking steps to conserve precious supplies of fuel and money, the top oil official in the breakaway east said Sunday.

The rebels need to repair equipment to pump oil from two key fields in the rebel-controlled east, Messla and Sarir, that were damaged in fighting, said Wahid Bughaigis, who serves as oil minister for the rebels.

"We just finished the assessment, and we are in the process of mobilizing the repairs," Bughaigis told reporters in Benghazi, the de facto capital of the rebel-held east. "We believe we need a minimum of four weeks to get back on stream."

ABOARD THE IONIAN SPIRIT (AP) -- An aid ship on Thursday ferried the bodies of two Western photojournalists from the besieged Libyan city of Misrata to Benghazi after they were killed and two others working alongside them were wounded while covering battles between rebels and government forces.

2012 presidential candidates `friend' social media

NEW YORK (AP) -- Republican Tim Pawlenty disclosed his 2012 presidential aspirations on Facebook. Rival Mitt Romney did it with a tweet. President Barack Obama kicked off his re-election bid with a digital video emailed to the 13 million online backers who helped power his historic campaign in 2008.

Welcome to The Social Network, presidential campaign edition.

The candidates and contenders have embraced the Internet to far greater degrees than previous White House campaigns, communicating directly with voters on platforms where they work and play. If Obama's online army helped define the last campaign and Howard Dean's Internet fundraising revolutionized the Democratic primary in 2004, next year's race will be the first to reflect the broad cultural migration to the digital world.

Police in Ethiopia have arrested 130 people described as religious extremists in connection with a series of church burnings in a Muslim-majority area. Tensions are simmering in a region where Muslims and Christians have lived side by side for generations.

Several U.S.-based Christian websites say Muslim extremists burned dozens of churches near Jimma town in the western Oromia region over the past several days. The websites quote local church members as saying thousands of Muslims had joined in the burnings, and that 4,000 Christians had fled their homes in fear around the small community of Asendabo.

Muhammad Yunus Calls Bangladeshi Bank Dismissal 'Political'

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus says the Bangladeshi government is trying to gain control of the microfinance bank he founded.

Yunus spoke to a panel on microcredit in Washington via teleconference Monday and said his dismissal as head of Grameen Bank was political. He says the bank should remain in the hands of its poor borrowers.

The Central Bank, which owns a 25 per cent stake in Grameen Bank, sacked 70-year-old Yunus last week, saying he violated retirement laws by staying on past the age of 60. It also said proper procedures were not followed when he was appointed managing director in 1999.

Genetic tests show fire ants in Asia came from US

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Even as the United States battles the spread of fire ants within its borders, this country is serving as the jumping-off point for the pest to invade other nations.

The aggressive, stinging ants arrived from South America and got a foothold in the United States in the 1930s, gradually spreading across the South. Now, researchers say, the United States has become the springboard in the last 20 years for the ants to invade such distant locations as China, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand.

Genetic tests on fire ants in the newly invaded countries found they came from the United States, rather than South America, an international team of researchers reports in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

Thai-Cambodia Fighting Slows Border Trade, Traffic

The Thai-Cambodia border is at an uneasy calm after recent deadly clashes near disputed territory left several people dead and scores injured. Thousands on both sides have fled the area. The fighting led to a dramatic drop in the number of tourists and traders crossing the border.

At the Chong Jom market on the Thai-Cambodia border, Cambodian shopkeeper Kaew Yungurn squeezes auto polish onto a rag. He demonstrates his product for a couple journalists and onlookers on a sample piece of a car hood.

As he works, Kaew says sometimes you have to apply two coats of the white liquid, which cost $6 a bottle. But now he shows how it can repair minor scratches.

Issa Invites Business Leaders to Vent on Government Regulations

WASHINGTON -- From large manufacturers to a small electric company, businesses complained Thursday about costly government rules at a forum provided by Republicans who are eager to slash federal regulations. Democrats protested that GOP lawmakers only wanted to hear about the burdens of regulation, not the benefits to public health and worker safety.

Witnesses at a House hearing complained about regulations on endangered species, excessive paperwork, anti-pollution standards and much more. Red tape was blamed for denying water to drought-stricken fields, for costing a contractor $10,000 for an unneeded lead inspection and for complicating student loans to minorities.
